James first became interested in making and repairing violins in the 1970’s. He previously worked in conservation and repair of historic buildings. As a wood carver and a fiddle player, he eventually decided to focus on working with violins as a career.
Initially self taught, he opened his workshop in Norton Fitzwarren in 1997 after working from home for two years. In 1998 James was visited by Robert Foster, an internationally renowned maker of viols and early stringed instruments. Robert had trained with Gil Solomon, one of the top violin restorers in the world, and offered to teach James very strict methods for violin repairs and restoration.
James has established a reputation as a violin restorer in his own right, with a client base throughout the UK and internationally.
